There are times when social media just works and this is one of them.  I put out a Tweet requesting stories of photographers working on projects to give back to their community.    Within twenty minutes Seshu of Seshu Photography in Connecticut responded.   The description of his project is short and sweet, but prompted a terrific conversation I had with him about his goals.

What hit me the most, is how small a community professional photography really is.   I’ve joked over the years about how we all go to the same rubber chicken dinners and all stand in the same registration lines, but didn’t realize Seshu and I had met many years ago.  This is going to be a year long project inspired by two photographers Seshu admires, as well as many others of us,  for their efforts to give back, Tero Sade and Paul Gero.

I am raising money for Connecticut Children’s Medical Center Foundation through a portrait project called Phases + Faces: The Kids  of Connecticut.  The goal is to photograph 200 children in the state, have their parents nominate them for the project at a “fee” of $100, with that entire amount going to the  hospital. I do not charge for my time. The project will culminate with a custom-designed coffee table-sized book for sale, with part of those proceeds also going to the charity in time for Christmas 2010.

Interesting in reading more about Seshu’s project?  It’s just a click away!
