No Matter Where You Are – Take A Snow Day!
Last night we were hit with a good old winter storm and I’m so amazed that’s everyone acted surprised. Winter, just like the holidays, comes pretty much at the same time every year, yet we always manage to miss the “heads-up”. Even the weather man on the news seemed concerned over the winter storm warning coming in, as if January in Ohio was supposed to bring seventy degree weather and good news for the orange growers! Come on guys, we live in the snowbelt, the Buckeye State!
The fans at the Rose Bowl yesterday were just as excited about seeing and feeling the warmth of the sun as they were Ohio State winning! It was the beauty of great weather without having to rationalize how much they like “the change of the seasons”! There’s another silly expression and you always hear it from people who don’t live where it’s nice all year long, “I love the change of the seasons! ” or, “I’d miss the change of the seasons!”
It’s a rationalization that personal experience has taught me is completely absurd. The fall, the spring, the summer all great changes in seasons, but honestly, would anybody miss ten degree weather and fish-tailing down the highway on ice and snow every time you needed to drive some place?

But, deep down, I know all my friends in southern California are envious of my new found Ohio weather. Their dogs are going to the beach today, but Molly and I will be out in the snow as she searches for balls lost in last week’s blizzard. And even better, there’s something calming about a great snow fall that helps you focus on the challenges bouncing around in your brain. It’s that winter solitude that gives you time to think about your next project, what to write about in your blog or people you missed during the holidays.
So, I’m taking a “Snow Day”. And my advice to anybody out there listening on this quiet winter Saturday morning is to do the same – even if you’re in Los Angeles – take a snow day. Take the time to just reflect, enjoy the weekend – everything you left on your desk, in your office or in some corner of your brain will be there on Monday morning!
Consider it a well deserved weekend off and, as a bad a pun as it works out to be, “Just Chill!”
Happy New Year has been extended to Monday…enjoy it!
