As the owner of a small studio, focusing on growing over the next 2 years, this is very helpful, thanks.
I hope to make it out to Summer School next year (August 2010 will be bringing a new baby just days after your conference!)

Great post! Can't really add any more. We photographers always think our pictures will speak for themselves - but they don't! And the most successful photographers these days seem to always be great marketers - either by intuition, or by trade.

Skip,

Very timely post for me. You summarized it well. So well that now I don't really need to read the sales and mktg book I bought to reaffirm what I know I should be doing. Thank you!

Chris...thanks so much for the kind words. I appreciate the "legend" comment, but in all honesty the thanks goes back to all the photographers who continue to make my career such a kick. It's easy to do something well, if you like what you're doing and the blog is a labor of love, as well as this industry. The truth is, so many of the things I've posted on the blog are simply ideas created by other photographers and it's their contribution that keeps us all on our toes. I'm just the messenger like the old town crier a couple hundred years ago! But, that doesn't mean I don't appreciate your support - so, thanks for being part of the blog!

So true. I think their is a myth in marketing that if you do a few things right that business will go on auto pilot for ever after that.

I was fortunate to have had great success with newspaper advertising in the past. One ad and the phone never seemed to stop ringing. But promotions like that are rare and good marketing requires us to be more active. Love how you point out it needs to be done every day.

This post like so many of your others is gold. I used a technique from your original post on wedding expos when helping a friend with her first one a couple of weeks back. I thought i had a good idea of milking wedding fairs but your added technique cranked things up a couple of notches and we never stopped talking/connecting with excited couples all day.

Which leads me to say thanks for your continued hard work and ceaseless commitment to helping others Skip Cohen. You are a legend.
