Developing Your Own Style
I know I mentioned this morning’s blog was going to be about jump-starting your own business. Check out www.goingpro2010.com this morning and ideas about kicking off a new business will be on the GoingPro blog. But that doesn’t mean I’m not without some great content here this morning!
I ran across a quote that really hit home and posted it on Facebook:
“Don’t expect anything original from an echo.” the author was anonymous.
I’m so tired of photographers working hard to copy another photographer’s style and along the way they lose their own identity. I look at Clay Blackmore’s work and I’m so proud of what he’s accomplished. He worked with Monte Zucker for years, but managed to take the best of what he learned from Monte and mix it with the very best of all the great contemporary masters at the time and then “seasoned” it with his own style, making him one of the very best today.
Anyway, my quote got some great feedback, so this morning, thanks to Cort Anderson,Terry Clark and Donna Keidel, here are some additional thoughts on photographers and the “echo process”!
From Cort Anderson:
“I have been thinking about this quite a bit lately as some friends are talking about going back to film and shooting with toy cameras and doing some very abstract work in Photoshop. Even though I have never shot with a toy camera I have a strong “Been there, done that” feeling about what they are doing.
And from Terry Clark:

Hey Skip, great post today! This topic is so on target and I love that someone has the guts to point out the elephant in the room. Kudos!

Skip..I am truly touched by your kind words and confidence. Monte and I had such a great run, and rarely does a day go by where I don’t ask myself, what would Monte do? He always pushed me to take it to another level. I am honored to be in this industry and am very excited about the future.
